Having an Attitude of Gratitude

Updated: Aug 19, 2022

Hello everyone! I hope you all have had a good weekend. For those that read my post about “Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone”, you know that I said I had a speaking engagement last week. I’m happy to report that everything went well! I spoke about being thankful, and I want to continue with that theme for this week’s post.

It’s so easy to focus on the negative things in life. Especially, when we’re faced with so many different obstacles and challenges. While preparing for my speaking engagement, I found myself thinking about all of the blessings in my life. I thought about all of the storms the Lord brought me and my family through. I truly am so GRATEFUL for all of God’s blessings. God has been our Provider, Healer, Protector, Way-Maker…He has been our everything.

It’s so amazing when His Word becomes real to you. Oftentimes, we read the Bible and say that we believe what it says, but it’s a whole different thing to actually KNOW God as everything it says He is. I feel like I have a greater appreciation and love for God just remembering what He has done for me.

There’s a song that comes to my mind, “Count Your Blessings”.

When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

(Refrain)
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God hath done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done. Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly,
And you will keep singing as the days go by.

Refrain

When you look at others with their lands and gold,
Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;
Count your many blessings. Wealth can never buy
Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.

Refrain

So, amid the conflict whether great or small,
Do not be disheartened, God is over all;
Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.

Refrain

This song is so true! As you begin to think about the blessings in your life, your mindset and attitude begin to change. You’re no longer focused on the negative, but you’re now focused on the blessings. When you’re mind is switched over to the blessings, you begin to have an “attitude of gratitude”. This doesn’t make our current problems go away, but it certainly helps you get through them. Remembering how God brought you out of everything else, reminds us that God is going to get you through the current situation.

The scripture I used last week was Psalm 107:1-9

1. Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever. 2. Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, Whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy, 3. And gathered out of the lands, From the east and from the west, From the north and from the south. 4. They wandered in the wilderness in a desolate way; They found no city to dwell in. 5. Hungry and thirsty, Their soul fainted in them. 6. Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, And He delivered them out of their distresses. 7. And He led them forth by the right way, That they might go to a city for a dwelling place. 8. Oh, that men would give thanks to the LORD for His goodness, And for His wonderful works to the children of men! 9. For He satisfies the longing soul, And fills the hungry soul with goodness.

I would like to encourage each of you to think about all of God’s blessings this week. Instead of dwelling on your problems, try to dwell on the goodness of God. Try to remember everything He has done for you, and have an attitude of gratitude.

Psalm 118:1 Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!
