7 Tips To Help You Understand The Bible Better

1.  God Wrote the Bible

According to 2 Timothy 3:16, All scripture is given by inspiration (God breathed).  2 Peter 1:20-21 says, "Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost."

2. Have Faith In The Word
You must put complete faith in what you're reading.  You're either going to accept the Bible as God's Word or you aren't.  Numbers 23:19 says, "God is not a man that he should lie; neither the son of man that he should repent. Hath he said and shall he not do it?  Or hath he spoken and shall  he not make it good?"  Hebrews 6:18 says it was impossible for God to lie.  Hebrews 11:3, "Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the Word of God so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

3. Read With A Spiritual Point Of View

When reading the Bible, we must read it with a spiritual point of view.  We must have this type of view versus having a humanly or carnal point of view.  John 6:63 says Jesus was having a discussion with his disciples about his blood being drink and body being bread.  They were taking what he was saying from a humanly point of view versus a spiritual point of view.  "It is the spirit that quickens (to give life). The flesh profits nothing; the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit and they are life."

4.  Get A Familiarity Of The Bible

You must get familiar with the Bible.  One of the things I recommend is starting in the New Testament and taking 10 - 15 minutes a day and pick up where you left off, and read it all the way through.  Afterwards you can do the Old Testament, but you want to stay consistent.  This helps you familiarize yourself with the Bible.  (You can also work on building up your Biblical Library.)

5.  Pray Each Time You Read

Make sure you're praying every time you read.  Ask God to allow the Holy Spirit to open up your understanding.  John 14:26 says, "But the Comforter which is the Holy Ghost whom the Father will send in my name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you." James 1:5 "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

6. Your Desire To Know More Will Cause You To Know More

James 4:8 says to draw nigh (near or close) to God and He will draw nigh to you.  Matthew 11:25 says "At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father Lord of heaven and earth  because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent (those who know it all) and hast revealed them unto babes (those who depend on and need help/ those whose hearts are fragile and easily receive, those who are eager to learn).  And lastly, when Jesus would give a parable, his disciples would always go back to him and have him expound on what he was saying in the parable.  They wanted the full meaning not just the story.  Can you see their eagerness to learn from Him?

7.  Ask God For A Personal Revelation

When we're speaking of revelation, it's revelation of God's Word and a greater understanding of His Word.  It isn't coming up with a new word or doctrine (teaching) that is contradicting that which is already written and established by God.  Galatians 1:6-8 says, "I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.  But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed."  Ephesians 1:17-18 , "That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:

The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints."
